Meet Alison Humphreys, author of 50 Hikes with kids, at Bethany Beach Books on Wednesday, August 13th at 6:30pm.
Alison Humphreys
Alison Humphreys holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology and is a college professor and licensed psychotherapist in private practice. With over 20 years of experience in the psychology and education fields, she has made a career of helping individuals and families improve their quality of life. She has also spoken at several national conventions on the topics of mental health and education.
Alison homeschools her four children with an emphasis on hands-on, child-led learning and unstructured time in nature. She and her family believe in making the world their classroom. As part-time travelers, full-time adventurers, they opted to run their own business so they could have more time to go on adventures, travel and chase sunsets.
Alison’s love of the outdoors and her belief that kids and families need time outside led to her co-authoring her first book, Virginia and Maryland 50 Hikes with Kids, which was published in July 2024.
While doing the 50 hikes in 5 states with her family of 6, Alison became acutely aware of how the outdoor spaces she loved to spend time in with her family were not accessible to everyone due to barriers such as economic status, physical ability, or geographical location. This led to her founding the nonprofit organization Freeing the Outdoors whose mission is to make the outdoors accessible to everyone.
